The International Finance Corporation, a sister concern of the World Bank and a member of the World Bank Group is the largest global development institution focused exclusively on the private sector in developing countries. The Dairy Development Program for the Pearl Dairy Farms Limited is an IFC project aimed at increasing the productivity of smaller dairy farmers in Uganda and transform them into competitive Commercial Dairy Farmers.

The IFC has initiated the project and has associated itself with partners like Pearl Dairy Farms Limited, The Friesian, SNV, and VetEffect to achieve the desired results in the region. The Program aims, in the next two years, to double supply of raw milk from participating dairy farmers which Pearl Dairy has committed to buying all the expected additional milk.

The Program aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Support Pearl Dairy establishment of a professional extension team able to advise and guide farmers on productivity and quality improvement in line with best industry practice
  • Improve the productivity of 1,000 Pearl Dairy direct suppliers by at least 30% through adoption of best agricultural practices
  • Scale up adoption of best agricultural practices through an outreach campaign targeting 5,000 farmers in Southern Uganda to improve their dairy practices.

The Friesian is the international specialist in marketing agrarian business knowledge offering consultancy services within the entire dairy value chain, from feed to factory gate. With hands-on support, The Friesian offers advice on all aspects of dairy farming (both rural and large scale), milk collection and processing to a wide range of clients. Bles Dairies’ origins date as far back as 1854 when the Bles family started their own dairy farm. More than three generations the Bles family has been engaged in farming in Friesland, in the north of The Netherlands.

The Friesian, in cooperation with VetEffecT, has been actively involved in an extensive “Dairy Farmers Development” project in Uganda along with IFC and Pearl Dairy Farms Limited. The DDP has The Friesian being involved as one of its primary stakeholders along with the team from VetEffect sees them providing strategic consultation and implementation services on matters concerning Dairy Management Training, Farm Improvement, Milk sourcing, Cattle management, Dairy officers training, CDF and Lead Farm’s appointment and management.

VetEffect is a global specialist in Veterinary and public health who provide services to improve on-farm practices with the sustainable use of natural resources, energy, and waste management. In association with The Friesian, VetEffect is directly involved in the strategic implementation of the Dairy Development Program (DDP) commissioned by PDFL and the IFC.

With the ultimate aim of increasing farmer productivity and achieve a sustainable increase in milk production from the farmers part of the PDFCs’ DDP, the company plans to achieve the same by empowering Farmers through direct engagement in the field. Over the course of the implementation of the DDP, the team expects to:

  • Establish a trained force of over 50 Dairy Development Executives
  • Identify, establish and drive change and implement best practices across the Lead Farms and Commercial Dairy farmers part of the program
  • Set up a lead farm mapping herd administration and a digitized DDE competence development tool
  • Create a core supply of 1000 CDFs to support the increase the production by 200K Liters
  • Reach 5,000 small CDFs to advise on improved farming practices

SNV was founded in Netherlands in 1965 and has established a long-term local presence in several countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America. In 2015, SNV began the TIDE (The Inclusive Dairy Enterprise) a 5-year program funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands and in partnership with the Netherlands Embassy in Uganda. The program focuses on the South west region of Uganda in districts like Bushenyi, Isingiro, Kiruhura, Mbarara, Ntungamo and Sheema.

SNV has associated itself with the PDFC initiative and assists the farmers under the program by providing advisory services and also supports the Dairy farmers through their recommended service providers with special discounted rates for the services on matters like

  • Practical Training on Dairy farms aimed at feeding, Nutrition, Breeding, Genetic gain, and Animal Health
  • Construction of milking parlours, Hay stores, Cattle crash, spray race etc.
  • Making equipment like farming machinery for growing pastures & fodders, Chaff cutters available for sale at discounted rates
  • Supporting farmers to acquire rain water harvest systems and provide solutions for water storage, preservation and distribution.
  • Pasture management, structural farm planning, fencing and paddocking
  • Arranging production improvement loans for Dairy farmers

The Agricultural Business Initiative (aBi) Trust is a multi-donor entity devoted to private sector agribusiness development. aBi Trust follows a long-term commitment by being both a catalyst in support of the Ugandan agricultural sector and a conduit through which development partners and investors can build the capacity of the agricultural sector. The Trust is jointly founded by the Governments of Denmark and Uganda. Other Development Partners include USAID, EU, Sweden, Belgium, Netherlands Embassy, UKAid, and KfW.

The aBi Trust provides both financing and technical support in selected agricultural value chains and offers an integrated approach on value chain development. aBi Trust provides its Milk coolers to Pearl Dairy Farms Limited for their Dairy Development Project to facilitate the establishment of Milk collection centers in the southwestern region of Uganda.

Tetra Pak supplies its machines and Packaging materials to Pearl Dairy Farms Limited and has been associated with Pearl for over 2 years.

Tetra Pak has been actively involved in the training of Lead farms part of the PDFLs’ Dairy Development Project. Tetra Pak aims to impart training to the farmers on several matters concerning hygiene, milk procurement, milk storage among many others.
